XAT 2026 Exam Analysis - Difficulty Level, Section Analysis and Key Takeaways

The XAT 2026 exam overall was not very different from last year. Decision Making and VALR remained steady whereas QA and DI were relatively tougher. Time management and error-free performance had an advantage for the candidates.

XAT 2026 was conducted in an online proctored format on 4 January 2026. XAT 2026 tested a candidate on verbal ability, decision making skills, quantitative ability, general knowledge and other parameters.

XAT paper has a well structured format which equally emphasises theoretical knowledge and logical thinking.

This article explains the format and pattern of the examination, its marking scheme, analysis based on sections, good attempts, difficulty level and cutoffs for XLRI BM & HRM courses.

XAT 2026 Exam Pattern Analysis

The XAT 2026 exam was divided into two sessions -

  • Part 1 lasted for a total of 170 minutes and there were three sections. However, there was no time limit for each section.

  • The second part is the General Knowledge component which was conducted separately for ten minutes.

XAT 2026 Marking Scheme

  • Each correct answer was awarded one mark.

  • Marking ofĀ  - 0.25 for each incorrect answer in Part One.

  • Penalty of 0.1 mark for each unattempted question after eight unattempted questions

  • Negative markings for the General Knowledge portion.

Overall Difficulty Level of XAT 2026

Comparing to the level of difficulty of the previous year’s exam the level of difficulty of the XAT 2026 sections is given below -Ā 

  • The Decision Making section was almost the same level as last year although a couple of questions were tricky.

  • The VALR level was set at par with that of the XAT 2025.

  • QA and DI was quite tough compared to last year especially the Data Interpretation portion

Section-wise Analysis of XAT 2026 ExamĀ 

Verbal Ability and Logical ReasoningĀ  - 26 Questions

This section had 15 Reading Comprehension Questions, two poetry related questions and nine Verbal Ability or Reasoning Questions. RC Questions included five passages or poems with words between 300 and 550 words long. Questions covered various levels of inference and application with medium to difficult level of difficulty.

Decision Making - 21 Questions

The Decision Making portion consisted of seven sets with three questions in each set. Similar to the XAT 2025 exam there were no Quantitative Decision Making problems. In a couple of questions the options were ambiguous where more than two answers looked apt. The level of questions was medium.Ā 

Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation - 28 Questions

  • Among these twenty-eight questions nineteen were based on quantitative aptitude and nine on data interpretation.

  • Arithmetic problems included topics such as time, speed, distance, profit & loss and races in a circular swimming pool. Algebra had an equation-based problem.

  • Geometry consisted of problems related to circles and tangents, triangles and rectangles, concentric circles, triangles and squares and height and distance. Modern mathematics problems covered functions and 3D Venn diagrams and probability.

  • There were seven questions from Numbers, one Data Sufficiency question as well as many questions involving finding the maximum or minimum value.

General Knowledge Section Analysis

The General Knowledge section had a total of twenty questions of which eleven questions belonged to current affairs and the remaining nine to static GK. The questions had a broad subject area and catered equally to all kinds of educational backgrounds.

As there were no negative marks candidates were instructed to attempt all questions. The benchmark for good performance would be scoring 5-6 marks.

XAT 2026 Conclusion

XAT 2026 maintained a consistent structure. Although VALR and Decision Making were doable, the most challenging section turned out to be Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation. Success depended heavily on section selection, time management and accuracy.
