PM Modi approves the IIM Guwahati campus in Assam

PM Narendra Modi and the Union Cabinet were hailed by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 14 for their approval of the new IIM Guwahati campus.

Sarma stated during a press conference that later this month, a bill for the new IIM will be presented in Parliament. The institute will be managed by IIM Ahmedabad and the state government aims to open classes as early as this year on a temporary campus. The permanent campus would be constructed in Palasbari, close to Guwahati in Kamrup district.

Guwahati will now become part of the leagues of cities boasting numerous flagships such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), National Law University (NLU) and a yet-to-be-constructed forensic university.

This institution will contribute to the long roll of the best institutes located around Guwahati and place the city on rightful grounds as a hub of quality higher education, stated the chief minister.

After the establishment of IIM Shillong in 2007 the IIM in Guwahati would be the second in the Northeast.
