Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Calls for the Strength of IIMs

The minister presided over the Coordination Forum Meeting of IIMs held at IIM Ahmedabad. The meeting was organised by the Department of Higher Education under the MoE along with IIM Ahmedabad.

The event was attended by:

  • Chairpersons of IIM Boards of Governors

  • Directors of IIMs

  • Senior officials from the Department of Higher Education

  • Representatives from the Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh governments

Focus on Academic Excellence and Innovation

During the meeting discussions were held on improving:

  • Academic excellence

  • Institutional coordination

  • Student welfare

  • Innovation and research

  • Global competitiveness

  • Leadership development

The minister said IIMs should help India face future economic, technological and social challenges while strengthening the country’s position in the global knowledge economy.

Importance of Values-Based Education

Dharmendra Pradhan stressed that management education should not only focus on innovation but also on ethics and values based leadership.

He said stronger IIM can contribute to:

  • Economic growth

  • Entrepreneurship

  • Startup development

  • Policy innovation

  • Global competitiveness

Discussions on Entrance Exams and Policies

The forum also discussed aligning undergraduate entrance exams with future skill requirements such as:

  • Analytical thinking

  • Technological capability

  • Innovation

  • Interdisciplinary learning

Members also discussed creating standard operating procedures for:

  • MBA admissions

  • Student migration between IIMs

  • Fee refund policies

The proposed changes aim to improve transparency, consistency and student convenience across IIMs.

Faculty Exchange Policy Proposed

Another major topic was a proposed faculty secondment policy that would allow young faculty members to work across different IIM campuses.

The plan aims to:

  • Support newer IIMs

  • Improve faculty exposure

  • Encourage academic collaboration

  • Share knowledge among institutions

Reservation Policy Also Reviewed

The forum reviewed the implementation of reservation policies for faculty and non-faculty positions to ensure diversity and inclusiveness in higher education institutions.

IIMs Expanding Global Presence

India’s IIMs have expanded their global recognition through:

  • Research partnerships

  • Global rankings

  • Executive education programs

  • Startup incubation initiatives

The government believes that stronger and globally competitive IIMs can play a major role in India's long-term economic growth and development goals under Viksit Bharat 2047.
