At IIM Sambalpur, 51.24% of the Incoming MBA Cohort Holds an Engineering Degree

IIM Sambalpur, one of India's newest IIMs has enrolled 363 students in its flagship MBA and newly established MBA in Business Analytics (MBA-BA) courses for the cohort of 2025-27. This time around the institute experienced a slight tilt towards engineers with engineers making up 51.24% of the incoming cohort an increase of 5% over non-engineers.

The difference is most apparent in the MBA-BA program, where 61.7% are engineers. But in the mainstay MBA program the figures are more equally split: 49.68% engineers and 50.32% non-engineer students.

One of the distinguishing features of the new class of MBA-BAs is that all students come with work experience in different professions. The institute also indicated that this would enhance peer learning and application of concepts in practice during classes.

The new cohort also has excellent geographic diversity. Almost every state and union territory, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has students.

Odisha, Delhi, Telangana, Kerala and West Bengal are next in line, with Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh holding the largest shares at 13% and 12%, respectively.

The institute has hired three students with physical or mobility challenges in keeping with its declared purpose of inclusivity and innovation.

International Goals and the National Theme

The director of IIM Sambalpur, Professor Mahadeo Jaiswal told the students during the opening ceremony that the institute's goal aligns with national initiatives like “Make in India" and "Digital India". Jaiswal said they now had to include 'Brand in India' in the list, highlighting the institute's AI-powered classrooms and Master Weaver program as instances of a new-generation IIM that emphasised social impact.

The chief guest, IAS, Secretary, DARPG, Government of India, V. Srinivas, said that the MBA-BA program was an extension of India's digital strategy as a whole. He added that the children would shape Viksit Bharat through innovation and honesty.

IIM Sambalpur is among the nation's premier management colleges, renowned for offering excellent education. On February 3, 2024 Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi officially opened the 200-acre IIM Sambalpur.
