Getting a score higher than the minimum requirement can potentially increase an applicant's chances of being selected and in certain instances may increase the probability of gaining scholarships particularly when complemented with excellent academic credentials.

Regarding the outcome, GRE scores are normally released 8 to 10 days after the test date. Students can access their official score reports by logging in to their ETS account and downloading or viewing them. Planning the exam date is essential because GRE results are valid for five years after the test date.

To stay on track, test-takers are encouraged to appear for the GRE a minimum of 2–3 months before their initial university application deadline. This will provide sufficient time to retake the test if required and enhance their scores. Students should also look at the target universities' average GRE scores section-wise (Verbal, Quantitative, Analytical Writing) so that they have a better idea of the score requirements and prepare accordingly.

What Is a Good GRE Score?

A good GRE score varies with the university and program you wish to apply to. Generally, though:

  • A score over 310 (combined Verbal and Quant) will be strong for most programs.

  • For high-competition schools a score of near or over 320 can be preferable.

  • The AWA section while separately scored is also relevant and must be in excess of 4.0.

Validity Report for GRE Scores

The validity of the candidate's GRE results lasts for five years after the test date. Therefore, it's ideal to take the test 2–3 months prior to their earliest application deadline. This helps to leave room for them to take the test again if necessary and raise their score.

Understanding Your GRE Score Card 2025

After the GRE, test-takers receive their official score report from ETS in 8 to 10 days. The report contains:

  • Verbal Reasoning score

  • Quantitative Reasoning score

  • Analytical Writing score

  • A percentile rank for every section

  • Personal information (name, DOB, gender)

  • Planned graduate major

  • GRE test date

  • Record of all GRE scores taken during the last five years

Applicants can have their GRE scores sent to up to four universities for free when they register for the test. Further score reports can be sent later after paying an additional fee.

GRE Score Reporting to Universities

When ETS sends candidate's scores to universities only limited information is released:

  • Contact information

  • Declared major

  • GRE scores candidates decide to report through the ScoreSelect option

What is GRE ScoreSelect?

ScoreSelect is an option from ETS that enables candidates to decide which GRE scores they want to send to colleges. If they have tested multiple times for the GRE, they can pick their best scores to share instead of sending all their attempts. This way, they can emphasise their strongest work.

How GRE Scores Are Calculated

  • Verbal and Quant Scores: On the basis of the number of correct answers. Raw scores are translated into a scaled score by a method known as equating in order to maintain fairness across test versions.

  • Analytical Writing Score: An ETS e-rater (computer program) and a human rater evaluate each essay. The average is calculated if the two scores are comparable. If the two scores are similar the average is taken. If not, an additional human rater evaluates the essay.
