IIM Ahmedabad Introduction

Established in 1961 and globally known as IIMA the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad is situated in Vastrapur, Ahmedabad. It has been named an 'Institute of National Importance' by the MoE, GOI. IIMA obtained EQUIS accreditation from the EFMD and became the first management school in South Asia to achieve this. Apart from Vastrapur, IIM Ahmedabad has its campus in Dubai as well.

The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad is one of the finest business schools in India. As per the NIRF Rankings 2025, it is ranked as the topmost business school in India and according to the IIRF Rankings 2025, it is ranked first under public institutions in India. In internationally rankings like QS World Rankings 2026, IIMA is placed at 58th position internationally while in the FT World University Rankings 2026 its international ranking is even better as it stands at 27th position internationally.

On 11th December 1961, the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat and the Harvard Business School collaborated with the Indian industry to form IIM Ahmedabad. Some very famous individuals contributed significantly to shaping the institute such as Vikram Sarabhai and Kasturbhai Lalbhai. But Kamla Chowdhary was also the inaugural faculty member of the IIM Ahmedabad & programs coordinator during the years 1962 to 1965.

The institute was given Ravi J. Matthai as its director. At the institute students are accepted to various master's courses in management & agribusiness management and other executive training and fellowship programs.

The CAT exam scores are one of the most important components for admission into the majority of management programs provided by IIM Ahmedabad.  The IIM A cutoff for the flagship PGP program, MBA FABM and ePGD-ABA for the year 2026 is likely to be in the range of 99 percentile. But for other courses such as the Executive MBA PGPX, Online MBA and PhD CAT cutoffs are neither officially declared nor applicable since they can use other criteria or tests.

IIM Ahmedabad Admission Process for PGP 

Prestigious IIM Ahmedabad MBA admission is a very competitive and involves a multi-step process. The IIMA PGP admission criteria are given below - 

Stage 1 - Shortlisting/ Eligibility Criteria for Analytical Writing Test and Personal Interview

Here the candidates are filtered from the entire pool of CAT applicants for further assessment in the subsequent round.

Shortlisting Criteria -

• CAT 2026 Score - The candidate must take the Common Admission Test. They should achieve a minimum sectional cutoff and an overall percentile. Such sectional cutoffs vary across categories such as General, EWS, NCOBC, SC, ST and PwD.

• Academic Merit - Grades from high school, intermediate and graduation are taken into account. The evaluation makes use of a rating scale that gives weightage on the basis of the candidate's absolute performance and academic discipline.

• Work Experience if any - Full-time work experience is needed. The marks rely on the period of experience as well as the excellence of experience as evident in the job profile.

• Gender Diversity - IIM Ahmedabad fosters gender diversity through the practice of granting extra points to female applicants particularly from streams where female enrollment is traditionally low.

• Academic Discipline Diversity - The institute places weight on diverse academic backgrounds, not engineering alone thus creating a balanced class composition.

Composite Score and Shortlist

• The above parameters are put together to arrive at a Final Composite Score.

• Candidates are shortlisted streamwise for the AWT and PI based on this score.

Stage 2 - Final Selection of Candidates
