XLRI Students Gain Leadership Insights from Nestlé India CMD Suresh Narayanan

Suresh Narayanan Nestlé India's Chairman and Managing Director, recently spoke to students at XLRI Jamshedpur in the institute's CXO Series in a strong session on "Leadership in Times of Crisis." Referring to the 2015 Maggi crisis he explained how resilience, effective communication and strong leadership guided through one of the largest brand crises in Indian business history.

Narayanan addressed a packed audience of up-and-coming business leaders, sharing practical insight and personal anecdotes. Far from the usual corporate address, the session became an exploration of values-based leadership founded on trust, integrity and level-headed decision-making in times of crisis.

He outlined a systematic crisis management technique from his own Nestlé India experience:

  • Be definite about the issue prior to reaction.

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation by assessing its scope.

  • Plan strategically following each step.

  • Operate on facts, not hypotheses.

  • Clearly define the roles of team members to prevent confusion.

  • Act with logic, remaining calm and objective.

He reminded the students that leadership is all about remaining honest and credible in the face of adversity. He urged them to be visible, communicate honestly and above all be human in their methodology.

For most participants, Maggi was an early childhood favourite and listening to the brand's return narrative from its CEO made the session intimate and unforgettable.
