According to Director Dr. Bhimaraya Metri the solar park is in its final stages and will help the institute cut down electricity costs drastically. When the park is operational the monthly electricity bill which is currently between ₹25 and ₹30 lakh will drop to about ₹6 lakh. The funds will be used for additional campus eco-friendly projects.
Adding an innovative touch IIM Nagpur plans to grow a kitchen garden under the solar panels. The area underneath the shaded space will be utilised to grow vegetables and herbs utilising every available inch of land.
This solar park is one of the institute's Net Zero Campus program components that will make it self-sufficient in clean energy and minimise its carbon footprint.
Additionally Phase II of the ₹250 crore campus development will shortly start according to Dr Metri. New academic and residential buildings will include sustainable materials, renewable energy and eco-friendly amenities. Every new structure will reflect IIM Nagpur's goal of creating an eco-friendly and energy efficient campus.
IIM Nagpur campus already showcases its green commitment with over 8000 trees, rainwater harvesting, treated water recycling and a four Star GRIHA rating for its smart and sustainable infrastructure.
From energy saving and biodiversity restoration to community activities through the Ummeed Club IIM Nagpur continues to lead by example in promoting sustainability and social responsibility.
