IIM Nagpur Launches India’s First Executive MBA in Energy Management

For working individuals IIM Nagpur has launched a new Executive MBA program in energy management. This is the first program of its kind in India for people working in the power, renewable energy and related fields. The course has been created along with the National Power Training Institute. Out of 168 applicants from across the country 43 candidates from 16 states were chosen for the first batch.

IIM Nagpur Launches India’s First Executive MBA in Energy Management

During the launch IIM Nagpur Director Bhimaraya Metri said that energy is the real strength of a growing country and India needs skilled energy managers. He said that no business school has previously provided such a specialist MBA. He added that India is growing fast and aims to become a 35 to 40 trillion dollar economy by 2047 so clean and reliable energy will be very important.

The keynote talk was delivered by the principal speaker Dr. Tripta Thakur VC of Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University and the former director of NPTI.  According to her India has expanded its electricity capacity from 100 GW to 500 GW and intends to double it once again within the next ten to fifteen years. She said the country now provides electricity to everyone but the next goal is to supply good quality power round the clock. She also shared that 51 percent of India’s installed power capacity comes from renewable energy. With India targeting net-zero emissions by 2070 she said this MBA will help build leaders who understand both energy and management.

Course chairperson Prof Nikunj Kumar Jain said the batch has students from many different sectors. About 55 percent are from public sector companies and 45 percent from private companies. Twenty-five percent of the participants are employed in sustainability and renewable energy and the other half work in electricity generation and distribution. 27 percent percent have ten to fifteen years of experience. Participants also come from major organisations like Power Grid Corporation, Damodar Valley Corporation, NTPC, IOCL and Mittal Nippon Steel.

Dr Indu Maheshwari from NPTI gave the closing remarks. With this new program IIM Nagpur aims to train future energy leaders who can help India achieve clean, affordable and reliable power.
