The questions focused on whether the large-scale infrastructure expansion planned in Ahmedabad expected to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and part of the country’s official bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games were preceded by adequate social and environmental impact studies.

The minister clarified that IIM Ahmedabad has been assigned by the Gujarat Sports Infrastructure Development Company Limited to conduct detailed studies regarding the economic and social effects of staging large sporting events like this.

On the issue of cost Mandaviya stated that the host state and the Indian Olympic Association have examined the requirements in respect of sports infrastructure, accommodation and other logistics that need to be satisfied for the successful conduct of the Games. The cost for the overall games operation and the cost escalation has been estimated within the official games proposal.

It was already said that the operational expenses of conducting the Games without the infrastructure costs were to range between Rs 3000 crore and Rs 5000 crore.

The sustainability initiatives that will be incorporated in the event were also emphasised by the Minister. He said that the sustainability plan for the games will focus on existing plans including the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan and the Climate Resilient City Action Plan which are geared at ensuring that the effects of climate change are reduced through effective urban planning approaches and climate change mitigation processes.

As reported by the government all initiatives on matters of the environment and sustainability which are associated with the games will be in line with the development objectives of the city.
