Government Announces Major Expansion for IIT & IIM Jammu

Sukanta Majumdar, MoS in the Ministry of Education submitted this information to the upper house of Parliament in answer to an unstarred question from Sat Sharma a Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Jammu about plans to expand IIT and IIM in Jammu.
The Union Minister pointed out that IIT Jammu since its establishment in 2015 had grown remarkably and its permanent campus built under Phase A with an approved amount of Rs 1182.56 crore is fully operational.
He further stated that the government approved the Phase B expansion for third-generation IITs, under which IIT Jammu will receive Rs 2468.44 crore for the upgrade of academic and research facilities, including a dedicated research park for industrial engagement and student creativity.
The Union Minister provided details about the IIM Jammu which was sanctioned in 2016 and presently has 1191 students enrolled in its programs.
The number of academic courses offered by the institute has expanded from 13 to 20. Additionally, it supports the J&K government's Mission Yuva Udyami Vikas Abhiyan (YUVA), which aims to give 4.25 lakh unemployed youth jobs over the next five years, he said.According to him, new sports facilities, a hostel for 688 students and an open-air theatre have been added to IIM Jammu's infrastructure. Both institutes are also working together through an MoU signed in 2021 which allows for collaboration in teaching, research, administrative assistance and placements. According to Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar, they also provide a dual degree program that combines an MBA at IIM Jammu with a BTech at IIT Jammu and a combined PG MBA (HAHM) degree in collaboration with AIIMS Jammu.
