The Indian Institute of Management Udaipur (IIMU), along with People Research on India's Consumer Economy (PRICE) has initiated a massive field-based research study to gauge financial maturity among individuals in Gujarat and Rajasthan, rural and urban. The extensive survey is part of a collaborative initiative to create an exhaustive Financial Maturity Index (FMI) that will guide data-based financial inclusion policies and activities.

A Joint Survey by IIM Udaipur and PRICE to Assess Financial Maturity in Gujarat and Rajasthan

The key objective of the study is to develop a Financial Maturity Index that indicates the extent to which individuals understand, organise and utilise their financial assets. The index will evaluate important factors such product utilisation, risk readiness, digital financial uptake, saving and planning habits and financial literacy. The study's goal is to produce useful information that can guide inclusive growth, financial education and public policy.

4,000 individuals, 1900 from rural areas and 2100 from urban areas, will be surveyed using a robust sample process to guarantee that a broad mix of age groups, genders, occupations, educational levels and income segments is represented. The districts of Ajmer, Banswara, Churu, Ganganagar, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jhalawar, Karauli and Udaipur in Rajasthan will be the sites of the survey.  Ahmedabad, Banaskantha, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara and Valsad are the districts that Gujarat has chosen.

The Chief Secretaries of the Governments of Gujarat and Rajasthan and the District Magistrates and Collectors of each of the selected districts received official communications about the study to ensure a seamless execution. Their cooperation is sought to facilitate smooth fieldwork and local mobilisation.

PRICE-trained researchers will conduct fieldwork, identifying themselves with official identification and being guided by strict ethical standards. The survey teams will start visiting households in August 2025 and the research is scheduled to continue for six months. All the data collected during the survey will be maintained completely confidential and utilised exclusively for academic research and policy formulation for the public sector. No personal data will be used for commercial ends.

It is based on expert views of IIMU and PRICE that this research is a crucial step to understand the financial behaviour of Indian households. The representatives urge people in the targeted districts to join in and contribute to the project. What they contribute will directly influence more inclusive and efficient financial systems.
