There are four important areas on the SET exam. These subjects include numeric aptitude, general awareness, English and analytical and logical reasoning. Each of these categories assesses specific skills. The applicants' grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and sentence correction skills are assessed in the English portion.

The quantitative aptitude section consists of basic mathematics topics like percentages, profit and loss, time and work, averages and number systems. General awareness questions incorporate the latest happenings in the world, business, politics, sports and other general knowledge topics. Analytical and Logical Reasoning measures a student's ability to think logically about puzzles, patterns, series and other logic-based problems. 

The test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions, with 15 questions in each section. Each right response receives one mark, and wrong replies receive no deduction. The test runs for sixty minutes. After the SET test, shortlisted individuals are called for further rounds. These rounds include Personal Interaction (PI), Writing Ability Test (WAT) or Studio Test. These rounds are based on the degree and institute.

In general, the SET exam pattern is simple and meant to test a student's fundamental ability and general awareness. To get good scores, candidates should practise sample papers, read day-to-day newspapers and go through school-level mathematics and grammar. Time management and regular practice are the keys to doing well in the exam.
