National Institutional Ranking Framework or NIRF is an infrastructure developed by the Ministry of Education GOI for ranking Indian higher educational institutions. The Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development released the National Institutional Ranking Framework on 29th September, 2015 after it was approved by the MHRD. It publishes a yearly ranking of top colleges and universities from different fields such as engineering, law, pharmacy and management. For those who want to pursue an MBA NIRF management rankings are especially useful because they provide a structured and genuine image of which business schools are performing the best in the country.
These rankings are important as they allow students and parents to make informed decisions while selecting an MBA college. Instead of relying on brand names or opinions of others NIRF provides a data driven, government approved list that reflects how successfully an institute is doing across various key areas. It is also deeply respected by recruiters, academic institutions and policymakers.
The NIRF rankings are based on different defined parameters which include Teaching, Learning & Resources keeping in mind faculty quality, infrastructure and student-faculty ratio. Research and Professional Practice encompasses research output, publications and projects. Graduation Outcomes checks how well the students do after completing the course including placements, compensations and higher studies. Other parameters like Outreach and Inclusivity and Perception of the institute by people are also considered. All these parameters collectively give an overall idea regarding the quality and contribution of a business school.
Overall NIRF are reliable rankings that allows MBA applicants to compare colleges beyond reputation, offering more insight into a college's standing.
NIRF Ranking Parameters
While ranking management colleges in India, NIRF considers five primary areas to determine how good a college is. These parameters or major areas are mentioned below:
Teaching & Learning Resources - TLR: This measures how good the teachers are, how many teachers students have and what type of classrooms, libraries and labs the college has.
Research & Professional Practice - RP: This examines the amount of research work the college undertakes such as publishing articles or conducting industry projects.
Graduation Outcomes - GO: This looks at what students do upon completion of their MBA – the number that find employment, their compensation and how many pursue higher studies.
Outreach & Inclusivity - OI: This considers how much diversity there is in the college – if students of varying backgrounds, geographies and genders are present.
Perception: This is regarding how individuals perceive the college – including input from recruiters, other colleges and the public.
These five points assist NIRF in providing a fair and transparent ranking of MBA colleges in India.
