Under the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) two award categories that were previously only available to school teachers were added for HEIs and polytechnics under the NAT umbrella in 2023.

Based on core performance factors like outreach, research and innovation, funded research, faculty development programs, consulting and the effectiveness of teaching-learning, teachers were chosen to receive the prize. The ministry said that learning effectiveness and outreach activities were the most significant factors.

An initial search-and-screening panel shortlisted candidates in the first part of the two-step procedure, and a nationwide jury then chose the winners.
